Linear and Non-linear Stories

Consider the following questions to determine the structure of your book.

• Is it linear or non-linear?
• Does the story unfold in chronological order?
• Does the narrator change?
• Are there flashbacks?
• How does the author inform the reader that they are reading a non-linear story?

Author's Background

Research the author's background. Consider the following questions as well as any that you might have.

• Which experiences in the author's life influenced his or her writing?
• Have other authors been an inspiration to the author of your book?
• Has the author written other books that might interest you? 

Jot notes in your reading journal and come to class prepared to discuss your findings with your reading group.
